What We Do

Five practice areas, applied across five sectors. Each can be commissioned on its own or combined into a single assignment, with the same independence and methodological rigour.

Practice Areas

What we do is organised into five practices. Together they cover each stage of a programme: understanding needs and context, strengthening the organisations that deliver, and measuring what was achieved.

Evaluation, Learning & Accountability

Independent evidence that helps programmes learn, improve and account for their results and resources.

  • Programme and impact evaluations
  • Monitoring, third-party monitoring and post-distribution monitoring
  • MEL systems and learning reviews
  • Financial verification, expenditure checks and accountability reviews
Capabilities in detail

Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL)

We design MEL systems and deliver evaluations, third-party monitoring, and post-distribution monitoring that promote programmatic learning and improvement, including in hard-to-reach contexts.

In insecure or hard-to-reach areas, we adapt data collection to what's actually feasible on the ground, using remote and mixed-method approaches where in-person access isn't possible, without compromising the rigour of the findings. The result is evidence donors and implementers can use to course-correct mid-programme, not just report on it after the fact.

  • MEL system design & capacity building
  • Third-party monitoring (TPM)
  • Post-distribution monitoring (PDM)
  • Impact evaluation & programme review

Financial Verification & Accountability

We strengthen transparency and donor confidence through independent financial verification services spanning partner capacity assessments, internal control reviews, and project-level expenditure verification.

In practice, that means looking not just at whether funds were spent as budgeted, but at whether the underlying financial systems and controls can be trusted to hold up under future scrutiny. Because this work is independent of the implementing organisation, our findings carry weight with donors specifically because we have no stake in what they show, and partners use our recommendations to close gaps before they become findings in someone else's audit.

  • Expenditure verification & spot-checks
  • Partner capacity assessments (PCAs)
  • Internal control & systems reviews
  • Grant compliance & accountability audits

Research, Data & Analytics

Research and analytical insight for decisions where reliable evidence is essential and access can be difficult.

  • Applied research, thematic studies and policy briefs
  • Surveys, public opinion polling and remote data collection
  • Market research and feasibility studies
  • Statistical analysis, data visualisation and digital data systems
Capabilities in detail

Research & Evidence Generation

We design and deliver thematic studies, applied research, and sector-wide reviews that inform strategy, policy, and learning, including in hard-to-reach contexts.

Where access is constrained, we combine remote and in-person data collection with local field researchers who can reach populations that desk-based studies can't. What partners get is evidence built to be used, not shelved: findings framed around the strategic or policy question that prompted the study in the first place.

  • Thematic & sectoral studies
  • Applied research & literature reviews
  • Baseline, midline & endline studies
  • Policy briefs & knowledge products

Polling, Surveys & Data Analysis

We design and implement polling and survey activities that generate reliable data to support decision-making in complex and fragile contexts, including insecure environments where access is the main constraint.

In insecure or access-constrained settings, that can mean remote or phone-based data collection, adapted sampling frames, and additional safeguards for enumerator and respondent safety, rather than a generic instrument applied everywhere. Once data is collected, our analysis goes beyond descriptive statistics to surface the patterns that matter for the decision at hand, delivered in a format partners can use directly in planning or reporting.

  • Public opinion & perception polling
  • Household, enterprise & KII surveys
  • Remote & phone-based data collection
  • Statistical analysis & data visualisation

Market Research

We provide structured market and sector research to inform investment, programme design, and private-sector strategy in fragile and developing contexts where published data is thin, stale, or politically contested.

That means original data collection, structured interviews with market actors, and triangulation across sources, rather than relying on secondary statistics alone. Where a market is contested or sensitive, we're explicit about the limits of the data and how confident a given finding actually is.

  • Market landscape & sector analysis
  • Investment feasibility & due diligence
  • Competitor & stakeholder mapping
  • Private sector strategy & entry assessments

Advisory & Organizational Development

Practical support to strengthen organisations, align strategy and build the systems and skills needed to deliver.

  • Strategy and organisational assessments
  • Systems strengthening and partner capacity assessments
  • Tailored training and workshops
  • Hands-on mentoring, coaching and capacity development
Capabilities in detail

Capacity Building

We support organisations and their partners strengthen the systems, skills, and practices needed to deliver and account for their work effectively through organisational assessments, tailored training, and hands-on mentoring.

We start by assessing where current practice falls short of what's needed, rather than applying a generic training curriculum, then build the specific skills, tools, and processes required to close that gap and stay with it through hands-on mentoring as staff put new practices into use. The goal is a partner that can deliver and account for its own work independently, not one that needs us back for the same problem next year.

  • Organisational capacity assessments
  • Tailored training & workshops
  • Hands-on mentoring & coaching
  • MEL, finance & data systems strengthening

Humanitarian & Recovery Advisory

Grounded advice for humanitarian response and recovery, informed by needs, local context and conflict sensitivity.

  • Rapid and in-depth needs assessments
  • Context, conflict and political economy analysis
  • Response planning and recovery priorities
  • Risk analysis, do-no-harm and conflict-sensitive programme advice
Capabilities in detail

Context & Conflict Analysis

We produce grounded analysis of socio-cultural, political, economic, and geographic factors contributing to conflict to help partners design programmes that address underlying drivers of vulnerability.

That means going beyond listing factors to show how they interact: identifying the actors, incentives, and fault lines that shape a given context, and flagging where a planned intervention risks doing harm or losing legitimacy with communities. Partners use this analysis to adapt programme design before implementation begins, and to inform conflict-sensitive adjustments as the context shifts.

  • Political economy & conflict drivers analysis
  • Conflict mapping & actor/stakeholder profiling
  • Risk & vulnerability assessments
  • Do-no-harm & sensitivity reviews

Needs Assessments

We conduct rapid and in-depth needs assessments to identify priorities, gaps, and opportunities, providing partners with precise, data-driven direction for programme planning and resource allocation.

The choice of a rapid versus a more in-depth assessment depends on the decision it needs to unlock, whether that's triggering an emergency response or shaping a multi-year programme design. Both draw on primary data collection, key informant interviews, and secondary data review to find where the real gaps sit, rather than where a programme assumes they sit. The output is a short, prioritised set of findings partners can act on directly, not a long report to be mined for insights later.

  • Rapid & in-depth multi-sector assessments
  • Household & community surveys
  • Response analysis & gap identification
  • Prioritisation frameworks for resource allocation

Sectors

Sectors describe who we work with and the setting of the work. They are not separate services: several practice areas can apply within a single sector, and one assignment often draws on more than one.

  1. Humanitarian

Evidence and advice for emergency response, protection and assistance to crisis-affected communities.

  2. Development

Research, evaluation and advice for longer-term livelihoods, inclusive growth and sustainable development.

  3. Education

Support for education programmes, learning systems, schools and education providers.

  4. Public Sector

Evidence and organisational support for public institutions, governance and public services.

  5. Civil Society

Support for civil-society organisations, community participation and locally led initiatives.
